French Toast Recipe

This timeless breakfast favorite starts with thick slices of bread soaked in a rich, spiced custard, then pan-fried to golden perfection.

Topped with fresh strawberries, maple syrup, and a dusting of powdered sugar, it’s a warm, comforting way to start the day.

Ingredients

  • 6 slices brioche, challah, or thick white bread (slightly stale is best)

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 cup whole milk (or half-and-half for a richer custard)

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

  • Pinch of salt

  • Butter or neutral oil, for greasing the pan

Toppings:

  • Fresh strawberries, halved

  • Maple syrup

  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

1. Make the Custard

In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and a pinch of salt. Whisk until fully combined and slightly frothy.

2. Soak the Bread

Lay the slices of bread in a shallow dish or baking pan. Pour the custard mixture over the slices, then let them soak for about 1–2 minutes per side. You want the bread to absorb the mixture without becoming soggy or falling apart.

3. Preheat the Pan

Heat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add a tablespoon of butter or a light drizzle of oil to coat the surface evenly.

4. Cook the French Toast

Working in batches, place the soaked bread slices into the pan and cook for about 3–4 minutes per side, or until each side is golden brown and slightly crisp. Avoid crowding the pan so each slice can cook evenly.

5. Serve Warm

Transfer the French toast to plates and top generously with fresh strawberries. Drizzle with maple syrup and finish with a dusting of powdered sugar for a beautiful finish.

Cooking Tips & Notes

  • Best bread choices: Brioche and challah are ideal for their richness and thickness. Day-old or slightly dry bread works better because it absorbs the custard without falling apart.

  • Customize the custard: You can replace milk with a non-dairy alternative like almond or oat milk. Adding a splash of orange zest or liqueur (like Grand Marnier) can elevate the flavor.

  • Keep it warm: If making a large batch, keep cooked French toast warm in a 250°F (120°C) oven while you finish the rest.

  • Prevent sticking: Wipe the skillet between batches and add more butter as needed to avoid burnt bits and sticking.

Serving Suggestions

  • Top with:

    • Fresh berries like strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries

    • A pat of butter and a generous pour of maple syrup

    • Whipped cream or Greek yogurt for extra richness

    • A sprinkle of chopped nuts for crunch

  • Serve alongside:

    • Crispy bacon or breakfast sausage

    • Scrambled eggs or an omelet for a complete brunch

    • A dusting of cinnamon or cocoa powder for added flair
